i have heard in 2012 federal regulations will prevent the sale of any new 2 stroke outboards, they will have to be 4 stroke. i dont know if this across the board or if it is only supposed to affect the higher horsepower engines. is this just a rumor or is it credilble?
now my question is this. i have an 04 3.0 litre 200 efi merc on my boat. from what i have read, this is a very desirable motor due to it's dependability and speed. if these regulations do come into play, do you think the value of my boat/motor will decrease or increase?
i am trying to decide if i need to try and sell my boat before the regualtions begin because i want to get top dollar for it. but if the demand for my motor increases due to the regulations, then i would need to hold on to it until after the change.
what do you guys think? LMB TO DATE 2010: 423 BIGGEST LMB 2010: 8.01 lbs

I haven't heard that but it makes sense to me that every 2-stroke would be worth more money after the regs kick in, at least to someone that really likes them over the 4-stroke. Fick

Went to a wedding two weeks ago and sat next to a Yamaha marine dealer. He said most definitly the law will go into effect and most marine engine companies are developing improvements on the 4 strokes to make them lighter. Not just Yamaha but all manufactures. The engine of the future will be a four stroke, and it will be cleaner.

I ran out and bought a 25HP Yamaha because they are not making it in 2 stroke anymore. I was glad to get one of the last ones in the area. My jon boat is going to fly with a 2009 25 on it. In RI most ponds (we really don't have lakes biggest is 1000 acres) are 10 HP limits so I have a 9.9 four stroke for those. 2010 Bass: Some but not close to enough.

I don't know if it's true or not, but I will say that it's the DUMBEST thing that could ever be passed. If it really looked like it would be a reality, I would buy up every 2 stroke motor that I could.

Maybe you guys can tell me the advantages/dis-advantages of the 2 vs. the 4. Why does it matter so much to some people and not others? Fick

4 stroke is quieter and better gas mileage...the two is lighter and faster. 2010 Bass: Some but not close to enough.

i hope they do not stop making the 2 strokes that soon.. I really like my 2 strokes and don't want to have to run a 4 stroke at least for a while

etommy28: jerr I got a question after reading these fact, I think I need a 4 stroke, will you buy it for me PLEEEEEEEEAAAAAAASSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
I hear ya on that one. More refreshing truth on why the changes would be bad.
My guess is the value would go up, especially for parts. Just because they don't make them doesn't mean there won't be a huge demand (as you can see in this thread). FBN Founder/Angler Support Our Sponsors!!!

All I gotta say is that happens and we had to put a 4 stroke on our boat the weight alone would never allow us to get on plane. Crankbaits, Frogs, and Swimbaits

The value would definitely go up. It is the same thing that happened to dirtbikes. Whenever they switched from 2 strokes to 4 strokes, the value of the 2 strokes shot up. Kawasaki even continued making them for 2 years after the 4 stroke and had completely taken over in motocross and supercross because they knew they could make so much money.

I've been hearing this "no more 2-strokes" talk for years now. Believe it when I see it.

wow, politics sure get the juices flowing ...some well thought out opinions there. Anyway, back to more important stuff ...I bought my boat about a year ago and got a $1,500 rebate for getting the 4-stroke ....I really didn't know much about it, but I found out the 4-stroke was quieter and more fuel efficient, (and cheaper for me with the rebate), so I went with it. My boat is a Bass Tracker PT170 with a Merc 40HP EFI, does 40 MPH and gets up on a plane fast enough for me. Well that's my contribution to this thread

I sure hope this yamaha sho does what it says it does and i hope merc gets something to compare with it..If they make a 4 stroke that is lite, fast and stay together i would be game..intill this is proven it will be hard for me to want a 4 stroke..Also man i love the smell of 2 stroke in the morning lol

Let's see, so far I've gotten quieter and better mileage, along with environmentally less damaging for the 4, lighter and faster for the 2. Any other major differences? So from what I know and have heard, it sounds like the 4-stroke is the way things will be. Sorry to say to all you 2 stroke lovers, but in today's world lighter and faster will get it's butt kicked by fuel efficiency, less noise, and less environmental impact. Fick

I get enough argument and hassle at home so normally stay out of these discussions but have any of you ever noticed the cloud of exhaust and oil slick on the water as a good sized tournament launched in the morning? The qualify of water in most basins like Kenwood and Buzzard Beach is decidedly lower than the lake due to oil floating in it. If they could lighten 4 strokes im all for them. Contrary to what a lot of bass fishement think going 70+ on water isnt required.
